The Electric Aviation Initiative.
Meeting the challenges
The aviation sector is under a lot of pressure to reduce emissions. Fortunately, the introduction of electric aircraft is imminent and will be part of the solution. Electric aviation will offer a great opportunity. Many of today's air routes are short range and can be serviced with (hybrid) electric aircraft. Moreover, worldwide there are thousands of airports that are underutilized and can become part of extended regional networks. Having electric aircraft in the near future is a good start. But recharging and creating the required charging infrastructure comes with sector-specific challenges.
1) Limited charging options with high requirements
All charging must be ultra-reliable fast charging at high capacities and can by definition only can done at one location: airports. Read more...
2) Looming disconnect between demand and supply
Airlines maintain networks, so decisions regarding where charging capacity will be needed and when cannot be taken by airports in isolation. Read more...
3) Lack of funding and expertise
Planning and implementation charging infrastructure requires specific know how and substantial investment which is especially a problem for smaller airports. Read more...
“Battery-electric aircraft infrastructure – including chargers, grid connections and energy storage systems – will be needed for at-scale battery electric operations and could take between two and four years from investment to installation.”
TARGET TRUE ZERO
World Economic Forum white paper in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, April 2024
“While aircraft developers and manufacturers are envisioning a new future of electrification, airports should start shifting their focus to the issue of long-term power demand. To deliver electricity the aircraft will need, airports and airlines will need to ensure significant infrastructure investments.”
REPORT ON ELECTRIC AVIATION – A SOLUTION FOR SHORT AND MID-RANGE FLIGHT
European Parliament, 15 December 2023

The Electric Aviation Initiative is an independent facilitator and investor that takes on take on the challenge to pave the way for the introduction of electric aviation. Working with airports, airlines as well as other stakeholders, our ambition is to drive the implementation of charging infrastructure in the EU in a concerted manner. In doing so, the needs of airlines are leading and not being associated with any OEM, we can make unbiased choices regarding how airports can facilitate those best.
We want to be there especially for smaller airports with less resources, and ensure that they can benefit from what electric aviation can offer both in terms of attracting new traffic as well as revenues from charging services. The introduction of the first-generation electric aircraft may seem far away but lead times for planning, decision-making and implementation will be considerable. Therefore, it's time.
What we do -
Match supply and demand
It begins with bringing together airports and airlines to match the future supply and demand for charging infrastructure.
Provide support and expertise
For identified charging locations, support the assessment of technical requirements and financial feasibility.
Invest and finance
Finance and invest in the development of charging locations, and source government funding. Furthermore we plan to participate in e-airline start-ups.
For airports -
For airlines -
